For the sauerkraut casserole, first preheat the oven to 200 °C.

Prepare a puree from potatoes, buttermilk and nutmeg.

Fry the sauerkraut in the lard. Sauté onion and sauerkraut in it. Add apples, clear soup, calvados and juniper berries and stew for about 30 minutes.

Spread half of the puree in a greased gratin dish (20×30 cm). Let the sauerkraut mixture drain well and spread it evenly on top. Cover with puree and sprinkle with the cheese.

Bake the sauerkraut casserole in the oven at 200 °C for about 40 minutes.
